Acupuncture Without the Needles

Laser acupuncture delivers the same powerful healing of traditional acupuncture using gentle, painless light therapy. Perfect for children, adults with needle sensitivity, and anyone ready to experience acupuncture for the first time.

What is laser acupuncture?

The Healing Power of Acupuncture, Delivered with Light

Laser acupuncture — also called photobiomodulation or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) applied to acupuncture points — uses focused, low-intensity laser light to stimulate the same meridian points used in traditional needle acupuncture. Instead of a needle, a small handheld device emits a precise wavelength of light directly onto the point.

The light energy penetrates the skin and interacts with cells in the same way needles do — activating the body’s natural healing responses, regulating energy flow (Qi), reducing inflammation, and stimulating endorphin release. The result is a genuinely therapeutic experience that is completely painless and non-invasive.

At Palm Coast Acupuncture and Chiropractic, Dr. Heather Schuerlein applies her doctoral-level training in Chinese Medicine and Oriental Medicine to every laser acupuncture session, ensuring the same precise, individualized approach she brings to all treatments.

"The same acupuncture points, the same healing principles — but without a single needle touching your skin."

Does it really work the same as needle acupuncture?

Research shows low-level laser therapy applied to acupuncture points produces measurable physiological effects — including local cellular stimulation, endorphin release, and anti-inflammatory responses — comparable to needle stimulation. For many conditions and patients, laser is equally effective and often preferred.

Frequently asked questions

Your Questions, Answered
Is laser acupuncture safe for my child?

Yes — laser acupuncture is one of the safest treatment modalities we offer for pediatric patients. The low-level laser used is non-thermal at therapeutic doses, meaning it does not burn or damage tissue. It is widely used in pediatric acupuncture practices globally and has an excellent safety record across all age groups.

For many conditions and patients, yes. Research supports laser acupuncture as clinically effective, particularly for pain, musculoskeletal conditions, and pediatric applications. Dr. Heather will give you her honest clinical assessment of whether laser or needle acupuncture would be the better fit for your specific situation.

Most patients feel nothing at all, or occasionally a very gentle warmth at the treatment site. Unlike needle acupuncture, there is no “Qi arrival” sensation (the achy, heavy feeling some patients experience). The experience is quiet and deeply relaxing for most people — and many children fall asleep during sessions.

This varies by condition and individual. Acute issues may respond in as few as 3–6 sessions, while chronic conditions typically require a longer course of care. Dr. Heather will outline a clear, realistic treatment plan at your initial consultation so you know exactly what to expect.

Coverage varies by insurance plan. We are happy to help verify your acupuncture benefits and discuss payment options. We also work with VA Community Care patients. Call our office at (386) 225-6134 and our team will help clarify your coverage before your first visit.

Absolutely — and it often produces the best results when integrated with other care. Laser acupuncture pairs beautifully with chiropractic adjustments, traditional needle acupuncture (for adult patients who tolerate both), massage, and shockwave therapy. Dr. Heather and Dr. Bryan collaborate on integrated plans when appropriate.
